Join CU Professor Zilla Goodman for a discussion that examines the lives of three remarkable Jewish mavericks: Henrietta Szold, Manya Shochat and Rosa Luxemburg. Although undeniably different in so many respects, these political powerhouses were figures who contributed much to the political and social thought in the first half of the 20th century in Israel and Europe.

Henrietta Szold was a founding member of Brit Shalom, a Zionist group that advocated bi-nationalism from its inception in 1925. Also a founding member of Hadassah, Henrietta was refined and contained in her manner but a ground-breaking figure who opened paths for many. Manya Shochat is considered ‘mother’ of the Kibbutz movement and a founding member of Shomer, the first Hebrew defense group in Palestine. A wild and colorful figure, rumors still abound about her life including possible assassination and lesbian relationships. Rosa Luxemborg was a revolutionary to her very marrow, who fought Lenin as she deemed the Bolsheviks’s recognition of national identity a betrayal of the Socialist cause.
